Small Umbrella In The Rain

by Eirwen

Boys are so stupid.  Especially Ron in particular.

Hermione Granger-Lupin sighed as she perched atop her favorite tree in the garden of the Marauder's Den.  Earlier that day, she and Ron just had another of their infamous arguments, and she's frustrated.  Very frustrated.

I thought everything would smooth out between Ron and I when we started dating…sure, every couple have their share of disagreements, but—

Hermione shook her head moodily.

We are just too different, Ron and I. Draco and Luna have their music, Harry and Ginny have Quidditch, Meghan and Neville both love plants.  And what about me and Ron?  We have nothing much in common, except that we love each other, and we bicker all the time.  How are we supposed to make it work?

As if in response, a small droplet landed on her head.

Great, now it's raining.

“Er, Hermione?”

Hermione turned around so abruptly that she almost fell out of the tree, if not for years of practice.

“Yes, Ron?” she responded tiredly, after jumping down from the branch and landing gracefully.

“Um, I'm sorry about what I said earlier.”  Ron fidgeted uncomfortably and looked everywhere but at Hermione.

Hermione crossed her arms and merely nodded in acknowledgement.

“I was rash, and I shouldn't have brought up Krum in the first place.  It was stupid.”

Hermione's expression softened.

“Apology accepted.  I've been thinking, though—”

Ron snorted.  “When are you not?”

Hermione sent a withering glare his way, successfully shutting him up.

“Ron, we are not at all alike.  We have our differences.”

She paused and furrowed her eyebrows in thought, debating how to phrase it, then began to sing.

If I say rain, then you say sun

If I say yes, then you say no

It seems before we start, we're done

We even argue at “hello”

She paused to conjure an umbrella as the rain intensified.

If I say, let me share with you

This small umbrella

Ron shrugged and sang in reply, following Hermione's pattern.

I say who cares if we get wet?

Hermione looked almost challengingly at Ron's eyes.

We are as different as the

Morning and the night

Ron shook his head.

No, we're as different as the

Winter and the spring

Hermione continued moodily.

We always seem to fight

We disagree on everything

Ron nodded in agreement.  Then, as if in realization, he pulled Hermione in a tight embrace, making her drop the umbrella in the process, and sang as he held her.

And yet…

You make me smile,

You make me laugh,

You make me care.

How can I explain?

Inside my heart

I feel a pain

When you're not there.

Though we're not at all alike,

You make me feel alive.

Ron pulled out of the embrace as he came to the long note.  He bent down to pick up the abandoned umbrella, and put it in Hermione's hand.

If we had that in common,

That one small thing in common,

Love could be like a small umbrella,

In the rain.

Ron looked at Hermione tenderly.

When people discover passion,

They've come upon something rare.

This fervor they have in common,

Will shelter them anywhere.

Though the rest may be rough,

With such passion to share,

I think we have more than enough—

Enough to make a marriage,

If we dare.

Am I hearing what I think I'm hearing?  Hermione stared at him with her mouth slightly agape.  Finally, after more than a few stunned seconds, she found enough voice in herself to speak.

”You are proposing?”

“No—Yes!  Yes!  I mean, not today.  Or tomorrow, or even next month.  In a year maybe, two years even.  I can wait.”  All visible portion's of Ron's skin turned bright red.

Hermione chuckled.

I won't be sweet, won't be demure

Ron nodded eagerly.

This I prefer, this I adore

Laughing to herself at his expression, Hermione sang teasingly.

I'll speak my mind, you can be sure

Ron grinned and winked flirtatiously.

I'll be enchanted to the core

Hermione moved herself closer to him and took his hand in hers.

We'll be as different as a

Husband and a wife

Ron suppressed an ecstatic yelp at her words, instead settling for a lopsided grin a he put his hand around her waist.

No, we'll be as different as a

Woman and a man

Hermione set her arms on his shoulders.

We'll fight our way through life

Ron rocked her to a slow dance to the beat of their song.

We'll disagree the best we can

Hermione beamed up at him as she followed his lead.

And yet…

Their voices blended in perfect harmony in reflection of their hearts.

You make me smile,

You make me laugh,

You make me care.

How can I explain?

Inside my heart

I feel a pain

When you're not there.

Though we're not at all alike,

You make me feel alive.

They stood still in the rain, and looked at each other contentedly.

Yes, we have that in common

That one small thing in common

Our love is like a small umbrella

In the rain
